A graduation celebration in Northern California ended in tragedy Wednesday evening when gunfire erupted in a school parking lot outside Fairfield High School following a commencement ceremony for Sem Yeto High School, leaving an 18-year-old dead and three others injured.
The incident took place around 7:15 p.m. outside Schafer Stadium on the campus of Fairfield High School, which was hosting the commencement exercises for Sem Yeto High School, an alternative continuation institution. According to the Fairfield Police Department, families, graduates and friends were gathered outside taking photographs and celebrating when the shooting occurred.
Four people were struck by gunfire: an 18-year-old victim died from injuries sustained in the shooting, while the remaining three victims—aged 11, 20, and 25—were transported to regional medical facilities. There are no finalized updates regarding their medical conditions, but officials said the injured victims are expected to survive. Authorities have not released the identities of those involved or confirmed whether any of the victims were students.
During an evening press conference, Fairfield Police Officer Michelle Belyea detailed the complexity of managing the active scene, noting, “It’s a very scary incident when something like this does happen, especially during the end of a school event,” and adding, “So, obviously, we just want everyone to be safe.” Police categorised the shooting as a “large scale incident” but noted they do not believe a broader threat to the public persists.
The Fairfield-Suisun Unified School District acknowledged the tragedy in a public statement, stating, “We are aware that there was a shooting after the Sem Yeto High School graduation ceremonies had ended, and are gathering details,” and adding, “Law enforcement is on campus, and as this is an active investigation, we have no additional information to share at this time. Our thoughts are with the individuals affected and as soon as we have more details we will share that with you.”
No suspects have been publicly named, and no arrests have been made. The Fairfield Police Department has requested that anyone possessing information or footage regarding the incident contact investigators at 707-428-7300.
