Authorities in Great Britain have taken five individuals into custody following an emergency response near a military facility utilized by American forces. Armed officers initially detained the suspects early Sunday morning on suspicion of explosives-related infractions near Royal Air Force Base Fairford in Gloucestershire. The Metropolitan Police subsequently held the group on suspicion of the preparation of a terrorist act after counterterrorism detectives assumed control of the investigation.
The law enforcement operation commenced shortly after midnight when officials received reports regarding three suspicious vehicles moving toward the airfield. Local residents noted that officers were “banging on the door” during the morning hours to instruct neighbors to leave the area immediately. In response to the potential threat, officials set up a 400-meter safety zone and directed roughly 85 nearby households to temporary emergency shelter while military ordinance personnel investigated the scene.
Military personnel operating out of the facility maintain elevated defensive postures. A military representative noted that members of the “501st Combat Support Wing and our fellow UK-based Wings remain vigilant and will take appropriate actions to ensure the safety and security of our US service members, civilians, contractors, and their families” across the regional theater. Enhanced physical security measures, including vehicle checkpoints and armed patrols, remain active along the perimeter of the installation.
Addressing journalists in Chicago, President Donald Trump commented on the operation, asserting that “we had them under view for a long time, and we got them” through joint intelligence efforts. He added that the suspects “were looking to do big damage” to the installation. Investigative teams continue to assess potential state-sponsored motives, examining possible links to Iranian intelligence or foreign intelligence networks.
The investigation remains in its initial phases as forensic teams review materials retrieved from the vehicles. Senior leadership from Gloucestershire Constabulary confirmed that public safety measures would stay in effect, while Metropolitan Police counterterrorism units work alongside federal partners in the United States to evaluate the scope of the plot.
