Federal law enforcement authorities have taken an 18-year-old Minnesota man into custody following an undercover counterterrorism operation that disrupted an alleged plan to execute a mass shooting at the Mall of America. Sheikhdoon Abdullahi Mohamud was arrested in a public park located in Richfield, Minnesota, after allegedly attempting to purchase weaponry to carry out the assault in support of the Islamic State group. A criminal complaint filed in federal court charges Mohamud with knowingly receiving a firearm and ammunition intended for use in a felony or act of federal terrorism.

According to court filings, the apprehension occurred after Mohamud provided $600 to an undercover FBI employee—whom he believed to be an ISIS operative—in exchange for an AK-47 assault rifle and 200 rounds of ammunition. Investigators allege that Mohamud had been engaging in communications with confidential federal sources, during which he repeatedly confirmed his intention to target non-Muslims in a public area. U.S. Attorney Daniel Rosen noted that federal law enforcement agents acted after monitoring the suspect’s activities, stating, “This was a radicalized young man who needed to be watched”.

Prosecutors contend that Mohamud intended to inflict maximum harm at the Bloomington shopping complex, with law enforcement alleging that his explicit goal was to kill tens of people. Commenting on the timeliness of the intervention, Rosen highlighted that federal agents “were able to detect a threat, and disrupt it, before the defendant carried out his intention to kill, in his words, maybe 30 to 60 people, as we allege in far greater detail in the complaint”.

The case is being led by the FBI Minneapolis Field Office alongside regional law enforcement partners as part of ongoing counterterrorism measures. Proceedings remain active in the U.S. District Court for the District of Minnesota, where formal federal charges were officially presented.
