Authorities have identified the victim who lost his life in a fatal roller coaster incident at Six Flags Over Georgia, prompting theme park operator Six Flags Entertainment Corporation to suspend operations on nine similar attractions across six locations.
The Cobb County Police Department identified the victim as 42-year-old Hassan Jihad Ibn Kariem, a teacher in the Atlanta Public Schools system. Preliminary findings from law enforcement indicate that Kariem was ejected from the train mid-ride, struck other passengers during the fall, and plummeted to the roof of a structure below.
Eyewitnesses at the Austell amusement park recounted harrowing details of the moment the accident occurred on the Goliath hypercoaster. Witnesses reported seeing Kariem lift clear out of his seat and mid-air before impact, with onlookers initially mistaking the falling object for personal property. Additional patrons sustained minor injuries when struck during the trajectory, according to investigators. Local emergency crews and amusement park staff rushed to the scene immediately following the incident.
In response to the fatal accident, Six Flags management enacted precautionary measures companywide. A corporate representative stated, “Out of an abundance of caution, we have temporarily closed similar attractions across our parks. The safety of our guests and team members is our highest priority.” The nationwide shutdown impacts major hypercoasters, including Behemoth and Leviathan at Canada’s Wonderland, Fury 325 and Thunder Striker at Carowinds, Diamondback and Orion at Kings Island, Nitro at Six Flags Great Adventure, Raging Bull at Six Flags Great America, and Goliath at Six Flags Magic Mountain.
The tragedy has drawn sharp reactions from community leaders and safety analysts advocating for stricter oversight. Cobb County Board of Commissioners Chairwoman Lisa Cupid offered condolences, stating, “I cannot imagine the horror the patrons and employees witnessed today, and my heart aches for the family who lost a loved one. We are all grappling with how something so devastating could happen at a place that has given generations of families such happy memories.” Industry experts noted that the multi-state ride suspensions underscore an urgent demand for centralized regulatory consistency, pointing out that regional amusement parks frequently navigate varying state-level inspection protocols.
Police and regional ride inspectors continue to conduct comprehensive technical evaluations of the ride mechanism and safety restraints to determine the root cause of the restraint failure. Six Flags Over Georgia remained closed as scheduled the following day while state investigators, law enforcement officials, and forensic engineers examined the scene. Corporate officials confirmed they are fully cooperating with external authorities during the ongoing inquiry.
