British comedian and actor Russell Brand has been found guilty of rape and three counts of sexual assault following a four-week trial at Southwark Crown Court in London. The 51-year-old was convicted Thursday after a jury deliberated for approximately eight and a half hours. The charges involved four women and incidents that occurred between 2004 and 2009, during the height of Brand’s career.

Brand was also acquitted of two additional rape charges and one count of attempted indecent assault. He had pleaded not guilty to all seven charges, maintaining that the encounters were consensual. Prosecutors argued that he used his growing celebrity status and influence to manipulate and sexually exploit women. The allegations became public following investigations published by The Times and Channel 4’s Dispatches in 2023, prompting additional women to come forward.

The Metropolitan Police said investigators interviewed more than 100 witnesses, collected over 400 statements and examined more than 1,400 documents while building the case. Authorities also reviewed historical records, photographs and hours of Brand’s television appearances, interviews and performances to establish timelines and assess witness accounts.

Following the verdict, Judge Joel Bennathan ordered Brand to remain in custody and indicated that he faces a significant prison sentence. He is scheduled to be sentenced Monday, Nov. 9. The Metropolitan Police also confirmed that Brand is under investigation in connection with two additional rape allegations, with information submitted to prosecutors for consideration.

Brand rose to prominence as a stand-up comedian and broadcaster before establishing a career in Hollywood, appearing in films including Forgetting Sarah Marshall, Get Him to the Greek and Arthur. In more recent years, he developed an online following through commentary on wellness, spirituality and politics.
