Illumination has released the final trailer for Minions & Monsters, the newest installment in the ‘Despicable Me’ universe and the third film centered on the wildly popular Minions.

Serving as a prequel to 2015’s Minions, the animated comedy follows the yellow troublemakers as they head to Old Hollywood with dreams of producing a monster movie. Their ambitious project quickly spirals out of control when real monsters are accidentally unleashed, forcing them into an unexpected fight to save the world.

The official synopsis reads: “This is the rambunctious, ridiculous and totally true story of how the Minions conquered Hollywood, became movie stars, lost everything, unleashed monsters onto the world and then banded together to try and save the planet from the mayhem they had just created,”

The voice cast features an ensemble lineup including Allison Janney, Christoph Waltz, Jeff Bridges, Jesse Eisenberg, Zoey Deutch, Trey Parker, and returning Minions director and voice actor Pierre Coffin.

Illumination CEO Chris Meledandri praised the project, saying: “The Minions have always had a wonderfully subversive spirit, and Minions & Monsters delivers a full dose of irreverence and comedic mayhem. Pierre and his Illumination team have brought a level of artistry to the film that has thrilled me all throughout production. The voice cast is filled with exceptional talent. The film’s story is unexpected and delightful, and perhaps the most lovely surprise is how Minions & Monsters serves to honor cinema, its origins, and the comedians who are the original inspiration for these adorable little guys.”

The Despicable Me franchise remains one of animation’s biggest success stories, beginning in 2010 and expanding into a global phenomenon largely driven by the Minions’ popularity. Spin-offs include 2015’s Minions, which earned over $1.15 billion worldwide despite mixed reviews, and 2022’s Minions: The Rise of Gru, which brought in more than $940 million. The most recent entry, Despicable Me 4, also performed strongly with nearly $1 billion globally.
