DreamWorks Animation has released the first teaser for “Shrek 5,” offering audiences a preview of the long-awaited return of one of animation’s most successful franchises and confirming Zendaya’s involvement as Felicia, the daughter of Shrek and Fiona.
The teaser reunites original cast members Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy and Cameron Diaz as Shrek, Donkey and Fiona, respectively, while introducing a new generation of characters. Felicia, voiced by Zendaya, joins her brothers Fergus and Farkle as the story shifts beyond the familiar swamp setting and into a larger adventure. The brief footage suggests the family will embark on a journey to a bustling city, with several scenes showing the characters ending up behind bars.
Directed by franchise veterans Conrad Vernon and Walt Dohrn, the film marks the first mainline “Shrek” installment since 2010’s “Shrek Forever After.” DreamWorks and Universal have scheduled the sequel for theatrical release on June 30, 2027. The teaser also includes the irreverent humor that helped define the series, including a playful parody of Disney’s “Frozen.”
While the trailer generated widespread excitement among longtime fans, it also sparked debate online over the film’s updated animation style. Some viewers praised the refreshed visuals and welcomed the return of the beloved characters, while others argued the redesigned look strays too far from the franchise’s original aesthetic. Critics on social media described the animation as more polished and cartoon-like, prompting comparisons to other modern animated features.
Despite the mixed reaction to the visual overhaul, anticipation remains high for the sequel. With the original stars returning and Zendaya taking on a prominent new role, “Shrek 5” aims to bridge generations of fans while bringing the Far Far Away universe back to theaters after nearly two decades.
