Marvel Television’s Wonder Man will not return for a second season on Disney+, reversing the show’s renewal announced just months earlier. The studio decided to halt development despite previously confirming another season following the series’ January debut. According to reports, a writers’ room for Season 2 was never assembled, and the writing staff has since been released to pursue other projects.
The series starred Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as Simon Williams, an aspiring Hollywood actor whose journey unfolded against the backdrop of the entertainment industry while introducing the Marvel Comics character into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Ben Kingsley reprised his role as Trevor Slattery, with the ensemble cast also including X Mayo, Olivia Thirlby, Demetrius Grosse and Arian Moayed. Created by Destin Daniel Cretton and Andrew Guest, the eight-episode series blended superhero storytelling with a satirical look at Hollywood filmmaking and earned strong reviews from critics.
Abdul-Mateen spoke out about the series cancellation on Instagram, writing: “Word just dropped that Wonder Man won’t be coming back for Season 2. (And if you don’t knowww, now ya knoww! ) That’s life, right? Everything will shake out. I wanted to say thank you to everybody who WATCHED the show, ENJOYED the show, and SHARED that they enjoyed the show in some way or other. The show worked. And that’s my favorite thing about it. I could see it on the faces of the Youtube Reactors (because I watched along with y’all this time. Shoutout to y’all) and I can see in the messages I get saying how the show reminded some of you not to give up, and I feel it in the genuine love shared when I bump into some of you all during the day. So, thinking of you all today. I’m glad we got to be a part of something cool. Thank you for watching… And uhh… See you at the EMMYS. ”
Disney and Marvel have not publicly explained the decision, and the cancellation comes as a surprise because Marvel publicly announced a Season 2 renewal in March, making the reversal an unusual move for the studio. Although the show received favorable reviews, including a Rotten Tomatoes score above 90%, and Abdul-Mateen later earned an Emmy nomination for his performance, reports indicate the project never advanced beyond its renewal announcement. Sources also said the decision does not necessarily close the door on the characters, who could still appear in future Marvel projects.
