Edgar Ramírez has signed on for the second season of HBO’s crime drama “Task,” joining returning star Mark Ruffalo as production continues on the next chapter of the series created by Brad Ingelsby. The addition of the Venezuelan actor expands a growing ensemble that already includes two-time Oscar winner Mahershala Ali, who was previously announced as a new cast member.
The first season followed FBI agent Tom Brandis, played by Ruffalo, as he led an investigation into a string of violent robberies in the Philadelphia suburbs. HBO renewed the series after its debut, despite the initial story reaching what many viewers considered a natural conclusion. Season 2 will again center on Brandis, who takes charge of a new task force as increasingly murky circumstances make it difficult to determine who is pursuing whom.
Ramírez will portray Miguel Fuentes, a Philadelphia-based DEA agent whose team becomes entangled with Brandis’ operation. Ali will play veteran DEA agent Eddie Barnes, a respected figure whose unit clashes with Ruffalo’s character. The series remains rooted in the Philadelphia area, a setting that has become a signature of Ingelsby’s work following “Mare of Easttown.”
Ingelsby returns as writer and executive producer alongside Ruffalo, with wiip producing the series. HBO has not announced a premiere date for the new season, which remains in pre-production.
