Sam Smith is sharing another preview from his upcoming album with the track ‘When He’s Gone.’ Smith officially announced their fifth studio album, “Hazel Eyes,” a 12-track project scheduled for release Aug. 21 through Capitol Records. See the lyric video for ‘When He’s Gone’ – HERE.
Smith had previously shared the single ‘Oh Mother‘ featuring The TwoCity Chorus, as well as the project’s introductory single, “My Guy,” available across streaming platforms alongside an accompanying music video. “My Guy” was jointly penned by Smith, Feist, and Ismaily. Characterized as an emotive, soulful composition, the track was inspired directly by Smith’s relationships and metropolitan surroundings. Speaking on the single, Smith noted, “This is a song that I feel I have been waiting a lifetime to write and sing. Written with beautiful friends on a summer’s day in New York, this one fell out of the sky. In this sometimes cold and distant world, I hope you can feel the love and the closeness of this recording. I tried to capture the glow and the warmth of love in this one, it makes me cry, maybe it will make you feel a little love too.”
Hazel Eyes serves as a creative dedication to New York City, where the British artist currently resides. Smith spent more than three years writing and refining the tracklist alongside a tight-knit circle of musicians. The project features production work by Simon Aldred and David Odlum, as well as collaborative efforts from Canadian indie-pop artist Feist, multi-instrumentalist Shahzad Ismaily, and arranger Rob Moose. Portions of the LP were tracked at the historic Electric Lady Studios in Manhattan.
Reflecting on the album’s creation, Smith expressed the deep professional and personal significance of the collection. “This album is an incredibly special record to me,” Smith stated in a press release. “I have been writing it for over three years with a very small group of beautiful, dear friends of mine. This album is very personal, and I feel I have deepened myself as an artist through the making of it, through being a producer on the record, to walking alongside this record from the start to the finish and pushing myself at every single turn. This record and this music is incredibly romantic. I’ve learned so many life lessons through making this album, and I’ve documented it all through the music.”
