Netflix has released the official trailer for “East of Eden,” its seven-episode limited-series adaptation of John Steinbeck’s 1952 novel. Florence Pugh stars as Cathy Ames, whose life becomes intertwined with the Trask family across generations. The series, created and written by Zoe Kazan, is scheduled to premiere Oct. 1.
The trailer centers on Cathy’s troubled nature and her complicated relationship with Adam Trask, played by Christopher Abbott. Mike Faist portrays Adam’s brother, Charles, while the story follows the Trasks and the Hamiltons against the backdrop of California’s Salinas Valley. The narrative draws heavily on Steinbeck’s exploration of family, rivalry, morality and the enduring themes of good and evil associated with the biblical stories of Cain and Abel and Adam and Eve.
Pugh’s Cathy is presented as more than a straightforward villain. Kazan’s adaptation gives greater attention to her perspective and attempts to examine the experiences and choices behind her destructive behavior while remaining rooted in Steinbeck’s original work. Pugh also serves as an executive producer on the series.
The ensemble includes Hoon Lee, Tracy Letts, Ciarán Hinds, Martha Plimpton, Joseph Zada and Joe Anders. Kazan serves as co-showrunner alongside Jeb Stuart, with Garth Davis directing the first four episodes and Laure de Clermont-Tonnerre directing the final three. The project follows an earlier Netflix teaser released in May and new first-look images unveiled in August.
