Hulu has canceled Mindy Kaling’s comedy series “Not Suitable for Work” after one season, ending the show’s run less than two months after its nine-episode first season concluded. The series premiered June 2 and followed five ambitious 20-somethings balancing careers, relationships and personal ambitions while living in Manhattan’s Murray Hill neighborhood.
The ensemble starred Ella Hunt as AJ, Avantika as Abby, Will Angus as Davis, Jack Martin as Josh, Nicholas Duvernay as Kel and Jay Ellis as Bill. Kaling created and executive produced the series with showrunner Charlie Grandy and Howard Klein. Recurring guest stars included Victor Garber, Greg Germann, Judy Gold, Ego Nwodim, Harry Richardson and Constance Wu.
The cancellation follows a first season that left several storylines unresolved. The finale ended with AJ and Davis kissing on New Year’s Eve, a moment witnessed by Josh, setting up a potential second-season love triangle. Kaling later discussed how the scene had been envisioned as the endpoint of the first season, while acknowledging that the characters’ futures could have taken several directions.
Kaling responded to the cancellation on social media, thanking the cast, crew and viewers for their support. The series received mixed critical reviews, although its audience response was stronger. Hulu has not announced plans to continue the show elsewhere, but Warner Bros. Television, which produced the comedy, plans to shop it to other potential buyers, leaving open the possibility of a second season on another platform.
“Not Suitable for Work” marks another short-lived series from Kaling, whose television credits also include “The Mindy Project,” “Never Have I Ever,” “The Sex Lives of College Girls” and Netflix’s “Running Point,” which has been renewed for a third season. All nine episodes of “Not Suitable for Work” remain available on Hulu.
