Macklemore has announced a new series of concerts under the banner “Free Palestine Tour,” weeks after he was let go from the remaining U.S. dates of Ed Sheeran’s Loop Tour following onstage comments supporting Palestinians. Controversy erupted after Macklemore’s Sept. 4 performance at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, where he called for a “Free Palestine.” As a result, the artist was removed from Sheeran’s remaining U.S. shows after venue concerns were communicated to tour promoter Messina Touring Group. Several other supporting acts later withdrew from Sheeran’s tour in solidarity with Macklemore.
In a statement, Macklemore said he began reaching out to artists who have publicly supported Palestinians and indicated that the shows came together quickly. “So, as you all know, my schedule freed up a bit,” he wrote in announcing the tour. He also said the concerts would bring together artists and friends who are willing to use their platforms to address issues beyond entertainment.
The initial run will begin in Europe, with performances scheduled for Oct. 26 at Dublin’s 3Arena, Oct. 29 at Paris’ Accor Arena and Oct. 30 at London’s OVO Arena Wembley. Additional U.S. dates and participating artists are expected to be announced. All proceeds from the concerts will benefit 12 organizations supporting Palestinians, including Anera, Gaza Soup Kitchen, HEAL Palestine, Medical Aid for Palestinians, Jewish Voice for Peace, the Palestine Children’s Relief Fund and UNRWA USA. The organizations provide or support humanitarian assistance, medical care, education, community services and advocacy.
