President Donald Trump announced Monday that mining company Mesabi Metallics will construct a $15 billion manufacturing facility in eastern Iowa. White House officials described the upcoming venue as the grandest steel plant in the nation’s history, representing the first mega-steel mill erected domestically since the 1960s.
The massive undertaking, backed by the Indian conglomerate Essar Group, forms part of a broader $18 billion domestic steel initiative. As part of the supply chain infrastructure, an additional $3 billion investment will go toward finishing a new iron ore mine situated along Minnesota’s Iron Range to feed raw materials directly to the Hawkeye State facility.
Project developers anticipate that the eastern Iowa plant will generate approximately 1,750 to 2,000 permanent manufacturing roles alongside thousands of temporary construction jobs. Once fully operational around 2030, the facility is designed to output roughly 10 million tons of steel annually.
The announcement comes as part of ongoing executive efforts to bolster heavy manufacturing and raw material processing within the American heartland. Local officials in Lee County, Iowa, expect the multi-billion-dollar development to significantly boost regional employment and industrial output across the Midwest.
