Lizzo has added children’s author to her résumé with the release of Lil Lizzo Meets Sasha B. Flootin’, her debut picture book published by Simon & Schuster Books for Young Readers. Illustrated by Mark Pett, the 40-page book is aimed at children ages 4 to 8 and follows a young girl who feels out of place before encountering Sasha B. Flootin’, a flute that is struggling to find its own sound.
The story sends Lil Lizzo and Sasha on a fantastical journey through a jungle, the ocean and outer space as they search for a way to make music. Along the way, the pair discover lessons about friendship, belonging and having the confidence to express themselves. The book also incorporates music directly into the experience. A QR code included in the book provides access to an original flute song performed by Lizzo and Sasha Flute.
The character Sasha B. Flootin’ is inspired by Lizzo’s real-life flute, Sasha Flute, which has become closely associated with the Grammy-winning musician. Lizzo’s connection to the instrument goes back to her childhood. In a recent interview with Vanity Fair Italia, she explained that she has played the flute since she was young and said the character was created in part to tell the story of how she began playing the instrument. She also noted that the name Sasha Flute was inspired by Beyoncé’s Sasha Fierce alter ego.
