A multi-vehicle traffic collision involving a school bus carrying nearly 40 passengers resulted in two fatalaties, and left several others hospitalized Monday morning in Polk County, Florida. Emergency responders dispatched to the scene in Winter Haven shortly after 6:15 a.m. located the bus turned over on its roof following an impact with an oncoming vehicle. Law enforcement authorities confirmed that a 10th-grade female student riding the bus and the operator of an involved Jeep both suffered fatal injuries during the crash.
Preliminary investigations indicate the incident occurred when an oncoming passenger car crossed the central dividing line, initiating a chain-reaction collision with the transport vehicle. At the time of the crash, the bus was transporting 37 Winter Haven High School students, the driver, and the driver’s 9-year-old daughter along its scheduled route. Addressing reporters during an early morning media briefing, Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd characterized the scene, stating, “It was a horrible crash”.
Medical personnel issued multiple trauma alerts at the scene, transferring several injured individuals to regional hospitals for emergency treatment, including at least one victim reported in critical condition. Roadway units closed down surrounding traffic lanes for several hours as forensic investigators processed the scene to establish the precise sequence of events. Local school district officials dispatched grief counselors and mental health support personnel to Winter Haven High School to assist students, staff, and affected families.
The Polk County Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate the crash, with investigators reviewing driver actions, vehicle positioning, and environmental factors. Authorities have withheld the official identities of the deceased pending full family notifications.
