Nearly three decades after Clueless became a defining teen comedy, Alicia Silverstone is officially returning as Cher Horowitz in a sequel event series for Paramount+. The actress will also serve as an executive producer on the project, which revives a continuation that was previously in development elsewhere before landing at Paramount+.
The series is set approximately 30 years after the events of the 1995 film and follows Cher as a successful businesswoman balancing family life while raising a teenage daughter. Original Clueless writer-director Amy Heckerling returns as an executive producer alongside original producer Robert Lawrence, while Silverstone reunites with the creative team to expand the story of the beloved character. Production is expected to begin in Los Angeles in 2027.
The project marks a significant turnaround after Peacock ended development of its planned Clueless sequel earlier this year. Following that decision, CBS Studios and Paramount continued shopping the series, eventually bringing it to Paramount+, where it has now received an official green light. Earlier versions of the franchise included a separate Dionne-focused reboot that never moved forward and a television adaptation that aired from 1996 to 1999 with Rachel Blanchard portraying Cher.
Released in 1995 and loosely inspired by Jane Austen’s Emma, Clueless became a cultural touchstone thanks to its memorable fashion, quotable dialogue and ensemble cast, which included Paul Rudd, Stacey Dash, Brittany Murphy, Donald Faison, Breckin Meyer and Dan Hedaya. Paramount+ has not announced additional casting, leaving open the possibility that more original cast members could return. Silverstone has previously said the goal of revisiting Cher is to “honor what everyone loves about ‘Clueless’” while introducing a fresh chapter for longtime fans and a new generation of viewers.
