Netflix has released the first trailer for “The Altruists,” an eight-episode limited drama starring Julia Garner and Anthony Boyle as Caroline Ellison and Sam Bankman-Fried, respectively. The series, inspired by the real-life collapse of cryptocurrency exchange FTX, is set to premiere Nov. 19.

“The Altruists” centers on the rise and fall of FTX and Alameda Research, the trading firm led by Ellison that was closely tied to Bankman-Fried’s cryptocurrency empire. Bankman-Fried was convicted of fraud and conspiracy and is serving a 25-year prison sentence, while Ellison cooperated with prosecutors and served a prison sentence following the collapse.

The trailer follows Ellison and Bankman-Fried as ambitious young figures seeking to reshape the financial system through cryptocurrency and effective altruism before their business empire unravels. Their professional partnership and romantic relationship become increasingly complicated as the company faces mounting financial problems and accusations involving billions of dollars in customer funds.

Graham Moore, who created and co-showruns the series with Jacqueline Hoyt, said the drama examines how the pair’s stated desire to do good became entangled with increasingly serious wrongdoing. The series also features Alex Lawther, Karan Soni, Madison Hu, Naomi Okada, Matt Rife and Eugene Young, with additional appearances from Paul Reiser, Robin Weigert, Jennifer Grey and Hudson Williams. The project is executive produced by Barack and Michelle Obama through Higher Ground Productions, along with Moore, Hoyt, James Ponsoldt, Julia Garner and others.
