Netflix is expanding the “Bridgerton” universe with a new limited-series spinoff centered on a young Lady Violet Bridgerton and her romance with Viscount Edmund Bridgerton. The currently untitled series will explore the early life of the character played by Ruth Gemmell in the flagship series and the love story that ultimately led to the Bridgerton family’s eight children.

The project will follow a similar approach to “Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story,” the franchise’s first spinoff, which explored the early life and marriage of Queen Charlotte. Shonda Rhimes and Nicholas Nardini will write, serve as showrunners and executive produce the new series. Tom Verica will direct and executive produce, with Betsy Beers also serving as an executive producer.

Netflix announced the project in the voice of Lady Whistledown, promising that “The love match that started it all shall soon be yours to see, dear reader.” The series will mark a deeper exploration of Violet’s relationship with Edmund, whose death is established before the events of the main “Bridgerton” story.

Casting has not yet been announced for the younger versions of Violet and Edmund. Gemmell has played Violet throughout the main series, while Connie Jenkins-Greig portrayed a younger version of Violet in “Queen Charlotte.” The new spinoff also arrives as production continues on “Bridgerton” Season 5, which will center on Francesca Bridgerton and Michaela Stirling.
