Questions remain regarding the tragic death of actress Hayden Panettiere, who passed away on Sunday at the age of 36 after being found unresponsive at a residence in Greenville, South Carolina. Emergency medical responders and local law enforcement arrived at a private residence in Greenville shortly before 2 p.m. following an emergency call placed by an acquaintance. Authorities reported finding Panettiere unresponsive after she went into cardiac arrest. Resuscitation efforts were performed at the scene, but she was pronounced dead at the scene.

In a statement released on behalf of the family, her father, Skip Panettiere, expressed heartbreak over her sudden loss. “She was an incredible light and a force of nature who brought immeasurable love and joy to all who knew her — and to the millions who watched her onscreen,” the statement said. Tributes from across the entertainment industry also continue to pour in following the announcement of Panettiere’s death.

Emergency dispatch information indicated that responders were sent to the residence after a call involving an unresponsive woman and a possible overdose and cardiac arrest. People reported that Narcan, an opioid-overdose reversal medication, was found at the scene.  The Greenville Police Department and The Greenville County Coroner’s Office said that they found no signs of trauma that contributed to her death, however the official cause and manner remain pending additional testing. Police also added that there is no indication of foul play or suspicious circumstances, with officials stating that an autopsy will be conducted to determine the official cause and manner of death.

Starting her career in television commercials as an infant before taking on daytime soap opera roles as a child in “One Life to Live” and “Guiding Light,” Panettiere became a household name in 2006 on the NBC series “Heroes”. She later earned two Golden Globe nominations for portraying country singer Juliette Barnes on the drama “Nashville” and starred in the “Scream” film franchise.  However her public career mirrored a complex personal journey, marked by candid openness in her later years regarding her struggles with severe depression, anxiety, and substance abuse stemming from her early entry into Hollywood.

In May 2026, Panettiere published her memoir, “This Is Me: A Reckoning,” and participated in several media interviews to discuss her recovery and path forward. She frequently addressed misconceptions surrounding her life, including her decision to grant custody of her daughter, Kaya, 11, to her former partner, retired boxing champion Wladimir Klitschko, during her ongoing treatment for postpartum depression and addiction. Panettiere had also endured significant personal tragedy in 2023 following the sudden death of her younger brother, actor Jansen Panettiere, whose death was ultimately attributed to an enlarged heart and aortic valve complications.

Panettiere is survived by her parents and her 11-year-old daughter, Kaya.
