Netflix has dropped the first trailer for Season 4 of “The Diplomat,” with the political thriller set to return Oct. 15. Keri Russell reprises her role as U.S. Ambassador Kate Wyler, whose professional responsibilities become increasingly tangled with the personal fallout from her fractured marriage to Hal Wyler, played by Rufus Sewell.
The new season picks up amid the fallout from Season 3, which ended with Grace Penn (Allison Janney) becoming president and Hal positioned as vice president. The trailer points to a crisis that threatens the fragile peace Kate helped establish between the United States and the United Kingdom, while her efforts to repair her relationship with Hal unfold alongside a rapidly escalating international situation.
Season 4 also puts renewed focus on the Penns, with Bradley Whitford returning as Todd Penn. According to the trailer, Grace and Hal become involved in a conspiracy involving a powerful Russian weapon that could push the United States toward war. Kate and Todd, despite their complicated relationship, are forced into an uneasy partnership as they attempt to counter the threat.
The season continues the series’ blend of geopolitical intrigue and relationship drama under creator, showrunner and executive producer Debora Cahn. Netflix previously confirmed Janney and Whitford as series regulars for Season 4, expanding the roles of the presidential couple following their introduction in Season 3.
“The Diplomat” debuted on Netflix in 2023 and has earned critical attention for Russell’s performance and its combination of political suspense with the complications of Kate and Hal’s marriage. All three previous seasons are currently available to stream on Netflix, ahead of the Season 4 premiere.
