Harry Styles paid tribute to his late One Direction bandmate Liam Payne on Oct. 16, performing an unreleased song he wrote in Payne’s memory during a concert at Madison Square Garden in New York. The performance coincided with the second anniversary of Payne’s death at age 31.
Styles introduced the acoustic song, titled “What Is Enough,” which he reportedly wrote shortly after Payne died. Before performing, Styles reflected on the people who had shaped his life and expressed how difficult it had been to process the loss of someone who had shared so much of his journey. Payne died Oct. 16, 2024, after falling from a hotel balcony in Buenos Aires, Argentina. He and Styles rose to international fame as members of One Direction, alongside Niall Horan, Louis Tomlinson and Zayn Malik. The group formed in 2010 and went on indefinite hiatus in 2016.
Styles’ performance offered a personal remembrance of Payne as fans gathered for his 30-night Madison Square Garden residency, which ends Oct. 31. The tribute also came amid renewed attention to the lasting impact of Payne’s death on his former bandmates and the group’s worldwide fan community.
