Amazon MGM Studios has shared the first trailer for “Madden,” the biographical drama starring Nicolas Cage as iconic football personality John Madden, set to launch globally on Prime Video on Nov. 18. Directed by Oscar nominee David O. Russell, the feature will enjoy a limited theatrical engagement starting Nov. 11 before making its streaming debut during the height of the NFL regular season.
The film examines Madden’s transformation from leading the Oakland Raiders to a Super Bowl victory in the 1970s to becoming a revered television analyst and the defining figure behind Electronic Arts’ multi-billion-dollar video game franchise. Russell directed the project from a script he co-crafted alongside original screenwriter Cambron Clark. The narrative focuses on Madden’s coaching career, his departure from the sidelines due to health issues, and his foundational relationship with Raiders owner Al Davis, played by Christian Bale.
Reflecting on portraying the Hall of Fame coach, who died in 2021, Cage highlighted Madden’s profound influence on American sports culture in a video featurette released on social media. “Accepting the role to play this larger-than-life legend has been a highlight for me. John Madden didn’t just coach football, he changed the game,” Cage said. The actor added, “His football brilliance was unmatched. As a coach, John was a savant, seeing the field in ways no one else could. As a broadcaster, his brilliance evolved.”
The drama features a high-profile ensemble cast, including Kathryn Hahn as Madden’s wife, Virginia, and Sienna Miller as Carol Davis. Comedian John Mulaney stars as EA founder Trip Hawkins, with Shane Gillis appearing in a supporting role. Escape Artists producers Todd Black, Jason Blumenthal, and Steve Tisch produced the film alongside Russell, Jonathan Shukat, and Matthew Budman.
